Interviews

Big Gigantic

Big sound, big setup, Big Gigantic. If you’re not familiar, think DJ + jazz + jam band. Whether you’ve seen them at a major festival – like Electric Forest, Bonnaroo, Ultra, Camp Bisco, or Global Dance Festival – or a concert venue like House Of Blues, the show itself is an eye and ear-catching experience with the combination of live instruments, lights, and visuals. Check out this interview with Dominic of the duo to find out who he wants to collab with, if this year’s Electric Forest rumor is true, if they’ll be implementing others into their act, and more.

Describe your sound with three words.
Dominic: Huge, big, live.

Are you planning on implementing any other live instruments/musicians into your group?
Dominic: No, I think we are just gonna keep it to the two of us. We’ve really created a great musical vibe together.

What about experimenting with more genres?
Dominic: Definitely more genres within the EDM genre. We keep trying to do new things and new styles, but really keeping our sound at the same time.

How long does it take to set up your whole live stage setup for a show?
Dominic: We get to town around 11 a.m. and our team sets everything up until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. We have a lot of lights!

Is there anything you do differently from one show to another?
Dominic: Yeah, we are trying to mix it up every night and play all of our new album, and most of our other songs/remixes as well, but still giving each night a bit of a different feel and it’s own identity.

Are the rumors about you guys being at Electric Forest this year true?
Dominic: Ah, sadly it’s not true. It’s one of our favorite festivals to go to and play, and we were sad not to get the invite this time around, but, I really hope we get invited back again someday.

Why have you released the Nocturnal and The Night Is Young albums for free?
Dominic: It’s just something we’ve always done. The mentality is that we want to people to have our music and come see us play live so we offer it for free from our website and then also sell it on iTunes and what not.

Is there still a significant chunk of albums purchased?
Dominic: Yeah! It’s pretty insane. We hit #2 on the iTunes electronic charts again this year. We were even sitting next to Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning album on the charts. It’s an honor people support us so much because we’re completely independent artists.

At what point in time did you realize this would be your career?
Dominic: I always knew I could do it. I just tried to stay focused on it and never took no for an answer. I always try to work as hard as I possibly can, and feel very very blessed to be able to do what I do.

Will there ever be a Big Griz collab with you and Griz?
Dominic: Yes! We already have a track out called “Power.” Check it out, I think you’ll dig it!

Who would you love to do a collab with?
Dominic: Disclosure, Skrillex, Flume, JayZ.

What can we expect of this Thursday’s show at House Of Blues Boston?
Dominic: Seriously, this tour has been raging! It’s gonna be big and bright and pretty much really awesome in general. Hope everyone can make it; it’s gonna be a party!

Check them out this Thursday, February 20, at House Of Blues Boston! 7:30pm, 18+
