Interviews

Paris & Simo

Following their start in the Montreal club scene, duo Paris & Simo have expanded to playing festivals like EDC Vegas and Escapade (with Europe coming up!), and gaining support from artists including Bob Sinclair, Hardwell and Tiesto. We discovered them on stage at the ‘3LAU Your Mind’ tour stop in Boston, and after chatting up Simo’s parents during the show, snagged a few minutes with the guys to find out more.

Did you two start off as a duo?
Simo: We were doing things independently, then we joined together later on because we did a collaboration. From then onward, we decided we wanted to make music together.

You both produce as well. Did you begin with production or DJ’ing?
Simo: We started as DJs, but we started producing young. We were 15 or 16 when we started playing around with DAWs.

What would you say is the best way to approach production?
Simo: It’s how much time you’re willing to put into it. There are so many tutorials and videos on YouTube that can teach you the techniques to become a good producer. At the end of the day, it’s all practice.

Where do you find influence?
Simo: We find influence in everything – rock music, dubstep, experimental music – but we focus on electronic music.

Do you do [music] full-time?
Paris: We swag all day.

Was there a moment you realized this wasn’t just a hobby anymore?
Simo: One day you’re wishing your song gets signed somewhere and next thing you know, someone like Tiesto is supporting your music. It’s just going with the flow.

If you could play with any artist, who would it be?
Simo: Our inspiration is definitely Axwell, but it’s hard to choose.

What’s on your iPod?
Simo: You’d find everything.
►Paris: Squirrels and bees….
►Simo: A variation of things. Although we love dance music, we like other things, too.
►Paris: A lot of rap music, a lot of chill out music, a lot of everything.
